Downey, Los Angeles County
The Apollo command modules that carried astronauts to the moon were built in Downey, at a plant run by North American Aviation. Engineers there later designed the space shuttle orbiters. The factory closed in 1999, and the Columbia Memorial Space Center, a hands-on science museum, now stands on part of the site in memory of the shuttle crew lost in 2003.
